The performance of road markings on the roads in Malta: a comparative study – Kirsten Zahra
The three different road marking materials (i) acrylic spray-painting, (ii) thermoplastic and (iii) cold plastic are studied. This presentation will highlight the relationship between the retro reflectivity and luminance over time of the road markings. The project identified the most feasible option with regards to cost in relation to its performance.
An analysis on asphalt deterioration in Malta – Daniel Micallef
The study was carried on real road surface and lab-based samples. Four road conditioning sections were considered, and samples collected from both damaged and undamaged parts for comparison and asphalt deterioration analysis. In addition to these samples, further samples below the damaged asphalt layer were taken. The project highlight difference in the physical nature in the damaged and undamaged asphalt including Air Voids, VFB% and the Bitumen Content.

Investigation of Environmental Control Solutions for Book Assembly – Adrian Zahra
Indoor air quality monitoring at book assembly facility is of utmost importance. The study assessed the feasibility of designing a climatic control system for security paper to remain unaffected by the indoor climate conditions. The Six Sigma DMAIC methodology is adopted as a guide through the process of understanding the root cause for problems related to poor air quality. Using a 2k factorial design of experiment supported by a climate chamber that regulates temperature and humidity while assessing paper thickness and grain direction were all consider variables both simultaneously and separately to understand the warpage behaviour. The project puts forward a number of recommendations to mitigate and control the book assembly environment on economic feasible level.
Design and fabrication of a foam mitigating pneumatic filling machine – Nicolo` Tanti
The aim of this project is to investigate pneumatic filling machine technologies found in industry minimising turbulence inside the container during the filling process and reducing the foam formation. The study was conducted through a test rig that uses a highly foaming detergent while computational fluid dynamic software was used to analyse the turbulence inside the container. The design of the nozzle was investigated in detail and different nozzles were manufactured conducting a comparative analysis based on turbulence parameters, flowrate and foam height.

Robotic Arm Manipulation Through a Wearable EMG Analysing Sensor – Steve Buhagiar
This project presents a portable, wireless non-invasive 8-channel EMG monitoring system, classifying hand and finger movement, operating at a low voltage of 1.8V with a signal resolution of up to 16-bit. A second stage was implemented using a GUI based software to filter and smooth the sensor signal. The software is capable of leaning finger/hand movement to produce an output to wirelessly control a robotic arm.
Integration of electric vehicles and photovoltaics systems on low voltage networks – Brian Bartolo
The presentation will highlight minimal mitigate solutions that may be or with minor policy and technical modifications be already available to integrate further photovoltaics (PVs) and electric vehicles which are usually associated with low-voltage (LV) network supply voltage variation and utilisation factor issues. Using Monte-Carlo simulation a stochastic study evaluates these mitigation solutions of reactive power injection/absorption through these existing assets and substation on-load tap changers. The results support further PVs and EVs integration while monitoring the utilisation factor will become more critical due to the added current flows that may cause heating and go beyond the capacity limit.
